CARPENTERS’ PENSION FUND OF SASKATCHEWAN

1. Description of Pension Plan

a) General
The Pension Trust Fund provides retirement and other benefits to carpenters in accordance with benefit schedules and eligibility requirements which have been adopted by the trustees. These benefits are expected to be provided from the net assets available and from employer contributions that are expected to be received in the future in accordance with the terms of collective bargaining agreements. The plan is registered under the Saskatchewan Pension Benefits Act registration # 050-753

b) Funding Policy
The Saskatchewan Pension Benefits Act requires that the Carpenter’s Pension Fund of Saskatchewan ensure that the Plan’s benefits are funded by the employers’ contributions.

c) Normal Pension
A Normal Pension is available to a participant, age 65, who has earned one Future Service Credit. The monthly Normal Pension is currently calculated at $50.00 per one thousand hours of future service credit.
Example: A carpenter joined the union in January of 2008 and worked 1800 hours per year for 10 years.
1800 x 10 = 18,000/1000 = 18. ($50.00 x 18) = monthly pension of $900.00 at age 65.

d) Early Retirement Pension
An Early Retirement Pension is available to a participant, age 55 or over, who is vested. The Early Retirement Pension Benefit is the Normal Pension Benefit accrued to date, reduced by one third (1/3) of one percent for each month of age less than age 65.

e) Disability Pension
A Disability Pension is available prior to Normal Pension age for an active participant who is vested. The amount of the Disability Pension is the Normal Pension accrued to date of disability. Participants who become disabled before the age of 55 will receive a disability pension based on the early retirement reduction as if they were age 55.

f) Pre-Retirement Death Benefit
Spouse’s Pension for Participants with More Than Five Years Credit
A pre-retirement death benefit is available to the spouse of an active participant who has at least five years of credit. The benefit is equal to the survivor benefit of the deceased’s 100% Joint and Survivor pension. If the participant is younger than age 55 at his date of death, the pension is calculated as if he was age 55 at date of death. The pension will be paid as a life annuity guaranteed for 60 months.

Pre-Retirement Survivor Pension for Participants with less than Five Years Credit
If a participant dies before he has attained age 55 and has less than five years of credit, the spouse will receive a pension based on 100% of the commuted value of the participants’ accrued pension, converted into pension based on her age. If a participant is age 55 or over at his death, the benefit is calculated as if the participant had retired on his date of death, and had chosen the 100% Joint & Survivor pension. The Pre-Retirement Survivor pension will be paid as a life annuity guaranteed for 60 months.

Death Benefit for participants without a spouse at date of death
If a participant does not have a spouse at date of death, a lump sum benefit is payable to their beneficiary equal to 100% of the commuted value of the participant’s accrued pension.

g) Post-Retirement Death Benefit
If a participant dies while receiving his pension, the benefit payable to his beneficiary will be based on the form of pension the participant chose at retirement. A participant’s beneficiary may be eligible for a monthly pension for the remaining guarantee period, if any, of the pension chosen by the participant at retirement. If a participant chose a Joint & Survivor pension, the survivor benefit will be paid to the spouse named at retirement, if still living. If a participant remarries after retirement, the new spouse will not receive a survivor benefit. The Plan Administrator must be contacted to determine what death benefit, if any, is payable in the event of the death of a pensioner.
