Through a negotiated hourly contribution made by the employer, we have the Millwrights Local 1021 Apprenticeship and Training Trust Fund that provides training on forklifts, overhead traveling cranes, JLG-boom lift, (N3) optical level, optical laser, welding, rigging, invisible optiline laser.

Why Join the Millwright Union?

Without a Union you have few rights on the job. You are almost powerless to achieve better wages, benefits, safety, and other working conditions.

Our strength on the job is being united through a Union. Joining a Union makes sense for the unorganized workers who also need a Collective agreement to protect their living standards for themselves and their families.

Tradespersons need their organization to promote and advance their interest against those contractors and governments who may seek to take away those standards, just like professional associations protect their own interests.

We strongly support the principles of:

  • A fair day's work for a fair day's pay
  • Equal access to employment
  • A balance between work and family.

Wages

In order to maintain our competitive position in the market place, we have established wage rates that reflect the nature of the construction industry in Saskatchewan. We have bargained with the employers based on the type of work they do and set wage rates so that our employers can successfully compete in the Saskatchewan market.

Benefits

Health and Welfare

Our health and welfare benefits are provided through a negotiated hourly contribution made by the Employer.

They include coverage* for Life Insurance, Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance, Dental, Prescription Drugs, Eyeglasses and Contact Lenses, Eye Examinations, Chiropractics, Physiotherapy, Ambulance Service, Private Nursing, Psychology, Out of Province Emergency Treatment, Hearing Aids, Weekly Disability, and more.

Pension

Again, our Pension benefits are provided through a negotiated hourly contribution made by the Employer. Our Plan is a group registered savings plan. We are currently contributing $5.05 into the plan.

Training

Through a negotiated hourly contribution made by the Employer, we have a training
fund that provides training for apprentices and upgrading programs for jurneypersons. See Become a Union Millwright.

Certification

How the Union legally represents employees is usually a simple procedure. First you must sign a Union support card which the Union submits along with other cards and their Application for Certification to the Labour Relations Board.

The Employer then must file a reply along with a list of names of those employees who work for them in the bargaining unit (all Millwrights, Millwright Apprentices and Millwright Foreman) to the Labour Relations Board.

If the Union has a majority of fifty percent, plus one of the support cards over the list of names supplied by the Employer, then the board will issue a Certification Order to that Employer. If the Union can show at least twenty five percent support, the Labour Relations Board will order a secret ballot vote among the affected employees to determine if a majority of support can be found.

It is important to note that the Union and the Labour Relations Board keep information on the support cards in the strictest confidence, and it is illegal for the Employer to ask an Employee if they ever signed a card.

If the Union's application is successful, the Employer is bound by law to immediately comply with the existing Province wide or Project Collective Agreement.

Advocacy

In addition to the Union negotiating and monitoring adherence to its Collective Agreements, we assist our members in regard to Apprenticeship Training, Workers Compensation, Occupational Health and Safety, and Employment Insurance.
